CharacterForge 15: gold, rain and one renderer

NSFW

The trailer will render entirely in Blender Cycles at 4K. Her bone hands are now polished pale gold, she gets wet, a shared look library is in place, the rig and physics were rebuilt on the final shapes, and her Japanese voice has four designed candidates.

  1. CharacterForge 14: the generator was right

A look back at where the build went wrong found one pattern. Every time our scripts rebuilt something the generators had already made, it got worse. The hair is restored, the torn bodysuit is being traced instead of redrawn, a shared tracing tool exists, and the accessories were rebuilt and checked by eye.

  2. CharacterForge 13: frozen parts, a real cloak, bone arms and hand-made eyes

Every part is cleaned and frozen in real units, the cloak is rebuilt the right way round, the bone arms rotate without stretching, the eyes are hand-made, and a skeleton walks in Unreal. The hair still needs another pass.

  3. CharacterForge 12: all five parts and the first assembled look

All five shapes are now generated and picked. The skin-tight outfit becomes paint, guided by a colour pass on the body. Head, body, boots, weapon and cloak were put together for the first time, and the cloak has to be redone.

  4. CharacterForge update 11: attempt 3, a new approach

Attempt 3 changes who makes what. Generators make the visible shapes, our code only builds the structure, and every look is judged by eye. The brief and the picture sheets are done, and the first Tripo gate has picked a head and a body.

  5. CharacterForge update 10: the cloak catches up, the hair starts over from the crown

C001's cloak reached pro level in a blind test, the face kit lost its two worst tells, and the hair is being rebuilt from the crown the way pro bobs are made. Every result so far is now frozen with recipes to get back to it.

  6. CharacterForge update 09: the first fully shaded look at C001

C001 is assembled and shaded for the first time: VRoid-based head and body with her own face, the adapted bob, the full outfit, gold bone arms and boots, all scored blind against pro models.

  7. CharacterForge update 08: switching to a VRoid base and scoring every part against pros

Blind tests showed C001's procedurally built head could not pass for professional, so her base head and body switch to a vetted VRoid base; a stitch lane now joins the parts and every part gets a score against pro models.

  8. CharacterForge update 07: the hood, the cloak and blind tests against pro faces

C001's silhouette now matches the concept: a peaked hood with its striped crest, layered shoulder pieces and a flared cloak. The face and head now face fair blind tests against pro faces.

  9. CharacterForge update 06: real eyes, a clean head and the cloak

C001's head is rebuilt as one clean mesh with no folds, her face kit gets flat-plate anime eyes, the cloak and lace border are in, and the hair is rebuilt from a single dome.

  10. CharacterForge update 05: first look at the whole character

Every lane's latest part assembled on one character for the first time: bone arms, winged boots, gems, skin-tight clothing, a game skeleton, and a head being rebuilt.

  11. CharacterForge update 04: the bone arm gets a real upper arm

Round 5 of C001's golden bone arm: the upper arm is carved from the same sculpted bone as the forearm, with curved elbow cut-outs and no clashing joints.
